Project Co-Director: Aktham Oweidi

Aktham Oweidi, former acting director-general of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, joined ACOR in January 2026 as a project co-director. He holds a master’s degree in archaeology from the University of Jordan and brings over thirty-two years of experience in the national antiquities sector. Throughout his career, he has held several key positions, including technical assistant for the D.G. and director of the Department of Excavations and Surveys. He is recognized as an expert in combating the illegal trafficking and forgery of antiquities at both local and international levels.

Mr. Oweidi has managed numerous local projects and served as a co-director for international initiatives in collaboration with the DoA. He is a member of the committee for the 14th, 15th,, and 16th International Conferences on the History and Archaeology of Jordan and serves as an editor for the Annual of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan (ADAJ). His scholarly contributions include numerous peer-reviewed articles, and he has presented his work at a wide range of conferences in Jordan and abroad.

In addition to his role at the Department of Antiquities, he was a member of the Steering Committee for the Local Communities and Sustainable Tourism Project in Petra and Wadi Rum, a member of the National Tourism Council, chair of the board of trustees of the Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration, and a member of the Technical Committee for the Protection of National Heritage.
