1. Purpose
As part of the organization’s ongoing effort to support the field and engage colleagues in advancing knowledge, this policy provides another method of interaction with scholars. Often called “associate fellows” or “research associates” at similar institutions, this policy intends to provide an avenue for greater enrichment for the academic life and engagement at the center, termed “Research Affiliates.”
2. Policy
A Research Affiliate contributes regularly and in person to the academic life of the center. Research Affiliates may be residential or non-residential at the center but must spend a meaningful amount of time at ACOR (determined in consultation with the Executive Director and Second Vice President) and are expected to attend lectures, brown bags, and other events. Undergraduate students and trustees are not eligible. Individuals who do not live in Jordan must be resident at the center for a sufficient period in order to become a Research Affiliate.
3. Expectations
The title is conferred for a predetermined period, corresponding to the expected time the affiliate will be active with ACOR. Research Affiliates should enrich the scholarly and social life of the center, while pursuing their research and personal enrichment. They may lead field trips, give lectures or seminars, arrange site visits, or other activities for the benefit of residents, fellows, and others at the center. Research Affiliates are expected to acknowledge ACOR in any publication(s) resulting from their term and provide a copy of the publication(s) to the library.
4. Benefits
Research Affiliates enjoy several privileges beyond those available to general visitors of the center, including: use of the title on their cv and in publications advanced during the term; use of a research carrel or other workspace, as available; invitations to workshops and special events, as appropriate; 24/7 access to the gym; Friday access to the library; free breakfast and coffee/tea; acknowledgment on ACOR’s web page.
5. Responsible use of affiliation
ACOR is an internationally recognized scholarly institution, and any affiliation must be used with care. ACOR is wholly and entirely apolitical and areligious—affiliates may not, under any circumstances, use an ACOR affiliation for any kind of political, religious, or other activities that might jeopardize ACOR’s reputation and standing. Research Affiliate status may not be invoked so as to use ACOR as the sponsoring institution when applying for or acquiring governmental permissions (unless previously discussed with the executive director and approved in writing), nor in association with a Fulbright application.
6. Procedures
Candidates should write to the Executive Director with a copy of their curriculum vitae or resume, a brief explanation of how they intend to participate in the center’s academic life, and the dates. Approval is made by the Executive Director in consultation with the Second Vice President (and other Trustees as needed). A report of all Research Affiliate requests will be made to the Executive Committee at its regular meetings. Assuming they completed their fellowship in good standing, prior ACOR Fellows who request to become Research Affiliates are automatically granted this status. Failure to observe ACOR’s relevant policies and procedures will result in immediate removal of privileges and title.
