Dr. John Shearman is the ACOR deputy director and will provide oversight for all ACOR operations reporting to ACOR’s executive director.
Dr. Shearman has an impressive more than thirty years of administration, management, development, and leadership experience, in which he gained strong knowledge of and a deep background in historic preservation, including successful preservation projects and community development.
Prior to assuming his present role, he was the chief of party of Sustainable Cultural Heritage Through Engagement of Local Communities Project (SCHEP) implemented by ACOR. He provided overall management and technical direction of the project and its staff, ensuring an integrated implementation among all stakeholders, engaging productively local partners, financial management controls, communications, and beneficiary relationships. The ten-year project was completed in February 2024.
Dr. Shearman earned his PhD in engineering, specializing in cultural preservation and construction-planning issues. Before joining the American Center of Research, he was with the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), where he was an Associate Director in Luxor for eleven years, with more than thirty staff members. During his time with ARCE, he oversaw all activities and monitored many initiatives involving USAID cooperative agreements in the Luxor area.
Other organizations have benefited from his valuable direction and management vision throughout his career. John has numerous professional affiliations, including as contributing member at the American Society of Overseas Research (ASOR), past chapter trustee and local chapter president at the Archeological Institute of America (AIA), founding member and director of certifications at the Management Science Institute (MSI), and member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the International Institute for Conservation for historic and artistic works (IIC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Construction Institute, and the Geo-Institute. Since 1994, Dr. Shearman has had a number of significant publications in international journals, focusing mainly on pre-construction planning methods for cultural preservation associated with construction on historic sites.
