Archaeologist: Holly Hughes

Holly Hughes joined the American Center of Research in February 2026 as an archaeologist. She holds an M.A. and a B.A. in archaeology from Brigham Young University (BYU) and brings more than nineteen years of professional experience in archaeological research and fieldwork. Since 2004, she has worked on numerous excavation and survey projects at UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Jordan and Syria. Her field experience includes participation in the BYU Wadi Mataha Archaeological Expeditions and the ad-Deir Monument and Plateau Project in Petra, Jordan, as well as the Palmyra and Apamea excavations in Syria. In addition to her extensive work in the Middle East, Holly has substantial archaeological experience working in the field of cultural resource management within the Great Basin region of the United States and in Hawai‘i. She has also served as a graphic artist, draftsperson, and traditional archaeological and scientific illustrator for numerous projects. In these capacities, she formatted publications, drafted site plan and stratigraphic profile maps, created site reconstructions, and illustrated small finds from excavations and botanical specimens for academic and technical publication.
