The American Center of Research, a nonprofit institution dedicated to advancing knowledge of Jordan and the interconnected region, past and present, seeks a Research Assistant (or two) to aid in the implementation of a National Endowment for the Humanities grant supporting publication of the Temple of the Winged Lions (TWL) in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra. This position represents an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with an archive of archaeological material and the process of preparing it for publication, as well as to network with leading scholars.

The selected candidate(s) will be required to assist with a variety of matters, which may include but may not be limited to: digitizing archival documents related to the TWL excavation performed by the American Expedition to Petra and the CRM project undertaken by Temple of the Winged Lions Cultural Resource Management Initiative and making these available to contributors through either an online archive or direct correspondence; finding documents and/or information within the archives at the request of contributors and editors; becoming sufficiently versed in the archive to guide publication contributors to the appropriate available resources; creating or amending spreadsheets to aid in the utility and accessibility of data; conducting other research and support activities in the project’s archives for the contributors and editors; organizing images for publication; manage content on the TWL Facebook page; preparing and plotting data for the spatial-distribution analysis undertaken by specialist researchers; organizing objects for return to the Department of Antiquities; other duties as assigned.

This is expected to be a part time 0.5 FTE (half-time) position for six months, but extension may be possible for up to 18 months total. Compensation will be based on experience. The successful candidate will be based in Amman, Jordan, but a portion of the work may be undertaken remotely.

A postgraduate degree or enrollment is preferred but not required. Candidates with a university degree or seeking a degree focusing on art, archaeology, cultural heritage, curation/museums, heritage management, or similar of the Near or Middle Eastern region are preferred, but all others with sufficient relevant experience will be considered. For best consideration, cover letters should state and explain such experience clearly.

To apply: Please send a letter of interest, names and contact information for three references, and current resume or CV to opportunity@acorjordan.org. References will be contacted directly by us, as needed. Only candidates who have been selected for an interview will be contacted. Salary will be based on experience. The American Center of Research contributes to social security/retirement, provides health, life, and dental insurance, annual paid vacation, holidays, and other benefits.

Review of applications will begin August 10th, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.

Proof of completed vaccination for COVID-19 is required prior to employment.
