The American Center of Research, a nonprofit institution dedicated to advancing knowledge of Jordan and the interconnected region, past and present, seeks a Deputy Director. This full-time position is intended to assist the organization in implementing its mission, especially including development of new and oversight of existing grant-funded projects, and to be actively engaged in efforts toward future growth. The position is located in Amman, Jordan; regional and international travel is required. The position is part of senior leadership, reports to the Executive Director, and supervises other senior staff. Total compensation (salary, insurance, retirement, etc.) to be in the range of $100,000 annually.

The successful candidate will be required to represent the organization and its projects in varied public, private, governmental, and academic venues and must be able to articulate the American Center’s values and mission. Applicants must be familiar with our history and strategic pillars (acorjordan.org/about). Demonstrated experience working with varied stakeholders, including scholars, government officials, and the public, is important. A record of supervision that has seen direct reports advance professionally is essential. The ability to foster collaborations and collegiality with external entities should be evidenced.

Candidates from a wide range of backgrounds and expertise are encouraged to apply, including anyone engaged in the social, natural and physical sciences, the humanities, or the arts. Cover letters should explain how the candidate’s expertise, experience, and skills are supplementary to those of current senior staff. Those with expertise and experience in the current, historic, or ancient periods of Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and/or the Arabian Peninsula are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications: At least 7 years of distinguished work experience in a relevant field; at least 3 years’ experience supervising staff; an advanced degree or comparable significant accomplishments and experience (e.g., foreign service); terminal degree (e.g., PhD, MSFS, MBA) is preferred, but not required; ability to maintain a positive work environment that motivates and engages others; strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and assessment; strong written and oral communication skills; sophisticated ability to navigate cross-cultural encounters and exchanges; experience working overseas, particularly in the Middle East; evidence of successful fundraising or grant writing is desired; fluency in written and spoken English is required; Arabic-language capacity is desired; the ideal candidate should be described by others as “a people person.”

Residency in Amman, Jordan, is required (though residency at ACOR’s center itself is not required). Proof of completed vaccination for COVID-19 is required prior to employment.
