CAORC Fellowships

These awards are made possible through CAORC (Council of American Overseas Research Centers) and funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. Proposed topics may be in any sub-discipline within the natural and social sciences or humanities, and may focus on antiquity, the medieval period, or the modern era.

Research topics are broadly interpreted and should contribute to scholarship in Near Eastern studies. The holders of the fellowships are expected to participate in the scholarly and cultural activity of the ACOR community while in residence.

Application deadline is February 15 each year.

ACOR-CAORC Pre-Doctoral Fellowships

The American Center of Research (ACOR) offers two or more fellowships for masters and doctoral students. Fields of study include all areas of humanities and the natural and social sciences. Topics should contribute to scholarship in Middle East studies. U.S. citizenship is required. Applicants must either be enrolled in a degree program, or be accepted to and planning to enroll in a degree program the next academic year at the time the award is used. For example, if the applicant graduated in May and is planning on using their award after that date, they must be planning on enrolling in another degree program in the fall. Confirmed acceptance to the program is required. Application requirements include:

  • Completed application form
  • Project proposal narrative (up to 2,000 words, not including bibliography)
  • Transcript(s) (first-year graduate students should submit both graduate and undergraduate transcripts)
  • Any additional supporting documentation (e.g., permit application letters; permission to transport special equipment)
  • Two recommendations, one of which must be from primary advisor

Two or more two- to six-month fellowships for master’s and doctoral students. Fields of study include all areas of the humanities and the natural and social sciences. Topics should contribute to scholarship in Middle East studies. U.S. citizenship required. Maximum award is $27,600. Awards must be used between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026.

This is a residential fellowship and residency at ACOR is required.

ACOR-CAORC Post-Doctoral Fellowships

The American Center of Research (ACOR) offers two or more ACOR-CAORC Post-Doctoral Fellowships for research in Jordan. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree or be scholars/professionals with the equivalent terminal degree in their field, pursuing research or publication projects in the natural and social sciences, humanities, or associated disciplines related to the Middle East at the time of application. U.S. citizenship is required. Application requirements include:

  • Completed application form
  • Project proposal narrative (up to 2,000 words, not including bibliography)
  • Any additional supporting documentation (e.g., permit application letters; permission to transport special equipment)

No letters of recommendation are required.

Two or more two- to six-month fellowships for postdoctoral scholars and scholars with another terminal degree in their field, pursuing research or publication projects in the natural and social sciences, humanities, and associated disciplines relating to the Middle East. U.S. citizenship required. Maximum award is $34,200. Awards must be used between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026.

This is a residential fellowship and residency at ACOR is required.
