Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behavior
Osama Samawi holds a bachelor’s degree in archaeology from the University of Jordan and a master’s in culture and environment in Africa from the University of Cologne, Germany. He is currently a PhD candidate at the Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behaviour (ICArEHB) at the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal. Mr. Samawi is a lithicist focusing on past human behaviors, adaptation strategies, and cognitive evolution during prehistoric periods—particularly the Middle Stone Age. He has participated in numerous archaeological excavations across Jordan, taking on roles such as researcher, student trainer, technician, and lithic analyst. These experiences have deepened his expertise in lithic studies and enhanced his collaborative and analytical skills. His academic development has been further supported by research assistantships in Germany and Jordan under the supervision of Prof. Maysoon Al-Nahar. Her guidance has been instrumental in shaping Mr. Samawi’s regional and theoretical knowledge. Mr. Samawi has authored and co-authored four peer-reviewed publications, with three additional papers currently in press. He is involved in several Middle Stone Age projects in Jordan, South Africa, Mozambique, Egypt, and Oman. He also specializes in stone tool knapping, with practical knowledge across a wide range of lithic technologies.
