Archaeology of the Ancient Near East

Carolina Cioffi has always nurtured a deep interest in the history of the ancient Near East, with a particular focus on the Levant and its territories. In 2023, she participated in the Archaeological Expedition to Khirbat Iskandar, directed by Dr. Suzanne Richard, Dr. Jesse Long, and Dr. Marta D’Andrea, contributing to a survey on the wadi terrace and to trimming operations on the southwestern edge of the site. Later that year, in September 2023, she took part in the Lebanese-Italian Archaeological Project in the Tyre region of Lebanon. In 2024, she returned to Khirbat Iskandar as field supervisor of Area RC02L, further deepening her experience in field archaeology. In March 2025, she completed her master’s degree with a thesis entitled “Tradizione e innovazione nella Giordania del Bronzo Antico: orizzonti ceramici e competenza tecnica dalla formazione alla crisi delle prime comunità urbane,” focused on the analysis of a ceramic sample from the site of Khirbat Iskandar. Her thesis formed the basis for two further academic presentations: the first, “Tradition and Innovation in Ancient Jordan: Ceramic Horizons and Technical Know-How from the Formation to the Crisis of Early Urban Communities,” was presented at Broadening Horizons 7; the second, “Methodological Approaches to Non-Stratified Materials: The Case of Khirbat Iskandar,” was delivered as part of the Transfert de techniques: innovations et substitutions project, organized by Archipels and Archéorient.
