The American Center of Research, a nonprofit institution dedicated to advancing knowledge of Jordan and the interconnected region, past and present, seeks a Project Archivist. This full-time position requires residence in Amman, Jordan, and is primarily intended to assist the organization in the implementation of a digital archiving project.

The ACOR Digital Archive contains nearly 70,000 records at present and serves as a critical source for research and educational initiatives about Jordan and the region. The archive is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, and its goal is to make an additional 18,600 multimedia objects (including photographs, audio and videotapes, and born-digital files) of relevance to regional cultural heritage and archaeology freely available online during the next four years.

Responsibilities:

  • Implementation and supervision of the technical aspects of the grant.
  • May involve supervision of other staff, depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
  • Ensure sufficient regular progress in processing, digitizing, and making freely available multimedia objects of relevance to regional cultural heritage and archaeology.
  • Contribute to the item-level description of digitized materials, as well as the creation of finding aids in Arabic, and translate existing English metadata into Arabic;
  • Add content and links from the ACOR Digital Archive to relevant English- and Arabic-language Wikipedia pages with appropriate and accurate descriptions;
  • Working with the Librarian and other staff members, prepare online exhibits using content in the ACOR Digital Archive to add to Google Arts and Culture;
  • Contribute to the creation of promotional materials for the collection, including print media and social media posts to be shared on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the American Center of Research’s audience;
  • Assist in the production of one (1) Arabic glossary of subject terms relevant to the archival collections, to be published via the open-access archive platform;
  • Promote the library and archives through social media, events, etc.; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

Anyone with sufficient relevant experience will be considered. In all cases, the following are required:

  • University graduate in cultural resource management, heritage, or archaeology; library and archival sciences; translation; or related degree program. MA/MLS level preferred, but not required.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop/Lightroom, Bridge), collaborative working tools (e.g., Google Drive, OneDrive), and MS Office programs (particularly Excel). Knowledge of digitization tools and equipment is important.
  • Working knowledge of proper care and handling of photos, slides, negatives, and similar.
  • Working knowledge of archival standards and practices, including metadata and digital imaging standards.
  • Experience with English-Arabic translation. Fluency in Arabic and English is required.
  • Experience or interest in archaeology, architecture, digital media, and archives, or related.

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position (1.0 FTE), resident in Amman, Jordan. The total compensation value will be approximately $12,000 to $20,000 annually, which includes salary, comprehensive health insurance, social security (U.S. or Jordan), securing residency and work permits in Jordan (if needed), dental insurance, a retirement plan, annual paid vacation based on length of service, annual paid sick leave, holidays, and other benefits. The specific salary will be based on experience.
