The American Center of Research, a nonprofit institution dedicated to advancing knowledge of Jordan and the interconnected region, past and present, seeks two Field Archaeologists. These full-time positions requires residence in Amman, Jordan, and are primarily intended to assist the organization in a major excavation to be conducted during the next two years. The successful candidates will implement and oversee excavations at a Roman-era site on the Dead Sea, including management of field work (survey, remote sensing, excavation), object cataloging, supervision, and analyses, leading to publication and preservation of aspects of the site.

Responsibilities:

  • Excavation.
  • Implement field and laboratory work and analyses.
  • Process data and prepare manuscripts for publication.
  • Maintain equipment, manage data, and ensure quality control according to ACOR standards.
  • Supervise field staff, interns, students, and partners while maintaining best practices.
  • Contribute to outreach and local community engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

Anyone with sufficient relevant experience will be considered. In all cases, the following are required:

  • A master’s degree; doctorate strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting archaeological fieldwork in the region; in directing work in Jordan strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in peer reviewed outlets.
  • Native-level written (including scientific writing) and good spoken English.
  • Team-oriented—proven ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and provide training.
  • Arabic language skills are preferred, but not required.

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position (1.0 FTE), resident in Amman, Jordan. The total compensation value will be approximately $70,000 annually, which includes salary (approximately half of total compensation value), lodgings at ACOR, comprehensive health insurance, social security (U.S. or Jordan), securing residency and work permits in Jordan (if needed), dental insurance, a retirement plan, an annual roundtrip airfare to the home country, annual paid vacation based on length of service, annual paid sick leave, holidays, and other benefits. The specific salary will be based on experience (note: if the successful candidate is a U.S. taxpayer, the salary can be exempted from U.S. income taxes, provided that certain qualifications are met). These positions are grant funded; changes in the grant may result in changes to the position(s).
