Abedalrahhman Alsaleh is studying for a master’s degree in geology in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Yarmouk University in Irbid, where he also serves as an assistant teacher. He previously earned his BA in the same subject at the Hashemite University and also holds a certification in innovation support for intellectual property.
Most soil maps of Jordan exist only at low spatial resolution (250,000 m). For the development of maps with high spatial resolution, remote sensing is necessary. Thus, for his master’s thesis, “Integrated Hyperspectral and Multispectral Remote Sensing Techniques for Mapping Soils in North Jordan,” Alsaleh will employ approaches that have not been previously used in Jordan. The techniques of hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing are highly efficient in terms of time and financial cost and offer the ability of immediate data updates. The area to the east of the city of Irbid has level 2 maps (1:50,000 scale) and ASTER and Hyperion-1 satellite data freely available online. These factors, and the varieties and properties of soils in the area, makes this location both ideal for the study and a challenge.
