Library

Our Library is one of the premier research libraries in the region. It contains more than 45,000 volumes and periodicals; with a focus on archaeology, anthropology, Arabic language and culture, art and architecture, conservation, history (Jordan and Near East), and Near Eastern studies.

The Library also offers an excellent collection of more than 1,500 maps covering Jordan’s topography, geology, and archaeological sites, as well as regional maps, rare topographic maps of Palestine, and a rare complete Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients.

We also house an impressive collection of more than 100,000 slides and images of Jordanian archaeological sites, excavations, and artifacts, including slides documenting our Petra Church Project, from its inception to completion. The Library provides important research resources unavailable elsewhere in Jordan. As part of an ongoing effort to improve access to these important collections, slides and photographs from a variety of collections have been digitized and are currently available online at: https://acor.digitalrelab.com/.

Please note, however, that we are a non-circulating library and it is not permitted to take books out of the library at any time.

Cooperation with other libraries in Jordan and development of unique assets and resources are key goals of the library. Purchases are expanding our collection annually. The library has undertaken the task of developing a common database between itself, other research institutes in Amman and the local universities. In the interest of efficiency and economy, efforts have been made to eliminate duplication in the Jordanian libraries. If one source of publications is available, the libraries seek not to overlap the same resources.

Since 2007, we have made the library catalog available as an online database so that remote visitors may view our library holdings, https://library.acorjordan.org. We are also able to provide access to JSTOR, the online archive for accessing scholarly articles from more than a thousand international academic journals. Accessing these articles is an essential part of engaging in professional scholarship. JSTOR offers researchers the ability to retrieve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated.

Our Library is the only public location in Jordan where researchers and students can have full access to JSTOR for free.
